Stickers dominate the streets. I love losing myself in the layered collages of vandals, artists, and businesses. My eyes dance around the various types of stickers—text based, illustration, die cut, rectangle, holographic. Some are worn because of age and quality, others worn because of agitation. Each sticker makes a statement. All these folks have something to say.
I remember growing up, some restaurants had sticker machines with cute illustrations of characters. We’d insert our quarters and hope to get our top choice. These stickers would decorate our composition notebooks, which we kept between a group of friends to share our journal entries or notes. An archaic form of the group texts today.
In college we’d don stickers on our laptops and Hydroflasks. They became statements of what we were into, clubs we associated with, our favorite restaurants or brands. The Hundreds had some of my favorite stickers due to their bold graphics and often subliminal messages.
Since entering the production world, we often trade stickers with other crew members on set. They become business cards. Others use branded stickers to label their gear, stamping their visual logo into your head so you remember and refer them for future gigs. Stickers also become efficient gifts or fundraising merch for a production. These designs take in visual themes or hero items in a film and become a stamp that you were associated with this production.
Seems like we never lost the satisfaction of being rewarded stickers like we did when we were younger for doing well in class.
